Survey of Italian Architecture was a mandatory drawing elective included in the study abroad curriculum at Syracuse University Florence. There were six weekend trips to the towns surrounding Florence, Rome and Tivoli, Venice, Como and Mantua, Siena, Pompeii and Paestum. The focus of these trips was to develop architectural sketching techniques, from building details to urban armatures. Students were required to keep two sketchbooks, one for field trips, the other for drawing exercises completed around Florence on weekends when we were not traveling.
